This second album signed by Franck Avitabile is in fact his first. The first where this twenty-eight year-old yound pianist frees himself of the invading shadow of Bud Powell. The first where he dares to display the wholescale of his lyric sensitivity and asserts the fullness of his musical personality.

Michel Petrucciani, who produced his previous album for Dreyfus Jazz, loved to say that Franck was a pianist with a promising future because he was determined. He knew how to refuse the traps and mirages of dispersion and to blend the genres to follow stubbornly and passionately his idea of music and improvisation.

Proven in this album, is his very personal manner to unstandardize the standards, as well known as Con Alma or Cherokee.

For a few years now franck has been working on the elaboration of a pruning a few notes off the original theme, changing the score, finding new chords, inventing a new rythmic attack and new harmonic relief.

As soon as you listen to this album, the evidence hits you.

Today, Franck Avitabile has no fear in splashing his keyboard with vivid and clear colors, giving himself up without false shame, to the pleasure of the melody that sings. He lets the music inside him go with the utmost liberty, and of course, always with great care of the architecture and harmonic coherence.

RECOREDED

mixed & masterised in February 2000 at Studio Ferber by René Ameline,

Piano STEINWAY D

#545206 prepared by René Defives.

"A young French pianist with a promising future and in some very illustrious company. He does a particular fine job of reworking Dave Brubeck's lovely In Your Own Sweet Way"

Peter Bacon, The Birmingham Post, 2001

"The young pianist pays tribute mainly with an unshakable lyrical gift and a touch of more than usual flexibility. The talented Frenchman has a way of composing tunes that recall jazz and pop classics without imitating anyone. When Avitabile turns to an actual old tune, like Cherokee, he does marvelous things. He and his trio effect a gradual acceleration that's perfectly coordinated and steadily exciting. In the crowed field of jazz pianists younger than 30, Avitabile is a name to reckon with"

Jay Harvey, **** (USA)

"Franck Avitabile already is an accomplished pianist, displaying command of his instrument, and more importantly, the ability to entertain an audience without ostentatiousness or imitation."Don Williamson - All About Jazz"On Right Time, Avitabile offers the most appealing approach of the three (Franck Avitabile, Eric Gould, Uli Lenz), largely because his lyrical style contains the best inner structure and logic. The best track is Avitabile's reworking of "Cherokee". Supporting Avitabile, bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted-Pedersen could hardly have been a better choice. His strong backing and dynamic solos are an inspiration throughout. Drummer Roberto Gatto keeps the rythmic lanscape stirred up enough so the proceedings don't become mired in lyricism." DOWN BEAT, Will Smith, August 2001 "On his aptly-titled new CD, "RIGHT TIME", young virtuoso AVITABILE steps out of Bud Powell's shadow. As was true of his mentor, Avitabile brings a warmly romantic heart & prodigious technique to a repertoire of his own compositions and very fresh interpretations of standards."ABC Radio - Lucky Oceans (The Planet)"Klar artikuliert Avitabile seine Ideen, die mitunter als auf die Vorbilder angewandte Verschlankungs- und Entschlackungsprozesse daherkommen. Immer wieder gibt es aber auch die perfekt aufgereihten Noten-Perlen-Ketten, die dann im Aha-Effekt des Déjà-entendu aufplatzen. Dennoch ein zweiter Einstand, der Lust auf mehr macht."

Thomas Fitterling, Rondomagazin (Allemagne)

Sich aus dem Schatten groBer Vorbilder rechtzeitig zu lözen, das ist für viele Jazzmusiker night einfach. Gelungen ist dies dem jungen französischen Pianisten Franck Avitabile mit seinem zweiten Album.*****"Tom Fuchs, Musik-Check,Act Music (Germany)"In two albums and some festivals, Franck Avitabile raised himself to the rank of the most important pianists of French jazz. By the light of his style, his impeccable instrumental technique, his permanent swing and his ideas, he proves besides that the language of the bop is more alive than ever. Just keep going! "

Henri MARCHAL, Jazz Journal Intenational - UK

"More lyric breath, a mechanics so successful but all the cogs of which would be put in contribution, the ease is such as one looks in vain for the "stuff", for the clichö, for the small auto-indulgent coquetry. The art to make exult all the piano, the swing over the shoulder. "

François Lacharme, Dial Magazine

"Avitabile varies tempos and colours with the delicacy and the refinement which are the privilege of the great masters of the keyboard. The rhythmic, of a remarkable quality operates in total osmosis with the soloist the qualities of which are not to be any more proved."

Frédéric Brucker, Le Progrès

" Nobody in Nancy City forgot Franck Avitabile. It was in 1998, in the Zenith Hall, in Michel Petrucciani's first part. A touch of an impressionante légereté, capable of taking the scores towards luxuriant banks where the most refined of the perusals serves as counterpoint in of passionate flown away. "

Jean Paul Germonville, L'Est Républicain

" With Right Time, Avitabile signs a CD which is a true happiness of colored intensities, intelligent harmonious metaphors and opening soul. "

Midi-Libre

" Franck Avitabile, several times outdon, had been already noticed by his work of the left hand. Today, one can admire its inspirations in pointed fast and it is often towards the extreme right of its keyboard that the most exciting things take place. "

M.P.G. Paulicevich, Nice Matin

" Avitabile expresses himself also with an emotion which touches the passion and galvanizes the immense Danish bassist NHØP. "

Epoc Magazine

" In 28 years, finally freed from Bud Powell's shadow, this definite pianist as liked defining him. Michel Petrucciani is not afraid any more of splashing the keyboard of lively colours and of leaving quite freely the music which burns in him. "

Virgin Megapress

" It is as the new horizon which is outlined, less athletic in its conception of the instrument, more lyric but always marked with a true pianistique rigour. One already asks for more it. "

Xavier Prevost, Keyboards

" Really, our friend irradiates us of his talent and even his compositions should pass in the offspring. Continue Franck and thank you for this transcendante music. "

Jazz Notes

" This young pianist, Michel Petrucciani's ex-foal, adapts the jazz to the waltz, to the be-bop, to the blues or to Brahms. Striking one virtuosity. "

France TGV

" Discovered by Michel Petrucciani, knighted by Wynton Marsalis to Marciac, Franck Avitabile imports the sharpnesses of Jean Sébastien Bach's writing in the piano jazz. "

alapage.fr

" Armed with luxury partners, Franck Avitabile makes watch of a beautiful sensibility in the waltz, in the lineage of Bill Evans, an original talent for the réharmonisation, a sure taste for the speed and a certain iconoclastic spirit and a pointed sense of dance. It already makes many qualities for a musician of less than thirty years, than one will follow henceforth of very near. "

Arnaud Merlin, Jazzman

" Franck Avitabile is not a pianist " very roots ", it is evident, but the musical choices can mature and the inventiveness in the interpretation of the standards, if he succeeds in avoiding the process, can be managements more in phase with the vigour of jazz. "

Jean Szlamowicz, Jazz Hot

" Together with the bassist NHØP and Roberto Gatto, he distils an art where precision and virtuosity adapts without a lyric on the surface of notes - the romantic interpretation of the standard " Cherokee " is completely exemplary. Unquestionably, one of the most creative and original national pianists of moment. To follow closely. "

fnac.com

" Three standards and six originals for an excellent disc of jazz (the bass is held by the Ørsted-Pedersen virtuoso Niels-Henning, in summary N.H. Ø. P., and not only a disease). A big pianist is being born. Moreover, in Avitabile, there is A."

Fantobass, Bass Magazine

"Avitabile varies tempos and colours with the delicacy and the refinement which are the privilege of the great masters of the keyboard. The rytmique, of a remarkable quality operates in total osmosis with the soloist the qualities of which are not to be any more proved."

Frédéric Brucker, Le Progrès

"The original compositions illustrate the often jubilant lyric of a lover of the melody capable of improvising with a big freedom on a harmonious base so subtle as coherent... Obviously, Franck Avitabile took his(her) flight. It will henceforth be necessary to count on him".
